THINGS TO DO IN YOUR FIRST WEEKS IN VILLACH

There is no doubt moving across the world can be a daunting process. For me, moving from Canada to Villach with my partner was one of the biggest steps I have ever taken. Whether it is missing home, worrying about the new city, or having troubles meeting new friends…there are endless thoughts that come to mind. I must say though, it was like Villach welcomed me with open arms, ever since my very first day. In this blog post, I will outline a few things I enjoyed doing in my first weeks in Villach.

ENJOY THE NATURE

It seems no matter where you are driving from, the views coming into Villach are extraordinary. I am from Ontario, and for those of you that do not know, there is not a mountain in sight. So, it is safe to say, the borders of beautiful mountains that surround Villach are truly breathtaking. Whether you decide to go for a hike, or simply go for a walk along the Drau (the river that runs through Villach), you are surrounded by beauty and nature wherever you go. For me, this is something I have really enjoyed doing in my first couple weeks here, and I think I will continue to enjoy it, for as long as I am here.

WALKING THROUGH THE STREETS

For me, one of the first things I wanted to do when I moved to Villach, was explore the city. I was curious about the different stores, cafés, restaurants, hotels, and everything else that filled the streets of Villach. Though this city is not very big, personally I find there is a lot to see. Throughout my walks along the cobblestone streets, I would run into different vegetable markets, stop at different cafés for an espresso and apple strudel, walk into different clothing stores and vintage stores and just continue exploring. I find this is one the best ways to familiarize yourself with the city, and truly appreciate all the different components that make up Villach.

TRY TRADITIONAL AUSTRIAN FOOD

Another thing I enjoy doing whether I move to a new place, or simply travel somewhere, is try the traditional food that is local to the location. Before moving to Villach I had never been to Austria. And for someone who enjoys food, like me, I was both excited and curious to see what traditional Austrian food has to offer. One thing I did notice is that Villach has a lot of restaurants. One suggestion I received from many locals was to try the Villacher beer at the Villacher brewery restaurant. This was my first experience trying Austrian food and the local beer, and I must say – neither disappointed. I also tried a few slightly fancier restaurants called; Jedermann and Lagana, these were two restaurants I will definitely go to again. As a result, in my first couple weeks here in Villach I was able to experience true Austrian cuisine at the various different restaurants this city has to offer.

LOTS MORE TO SEE!

In the end, my first couple of weeks in Villach have been nothing short of great. The nature, the beautiful unique cobblestone streets, and the delicious Austrian food are only a portion of what Villach has to offer. One of my favorite parts about this city is that even though there are more than 64,000 people, it still feels like a small, vibrant town. There is lots to do, see, and eat. I am definitely happy to be here, and excited to continue exploring.
