In and around Villach, water sports enthusiasts will find ideal conditions – whether for leisurely outings or athletic SUP tours. The turquoise Faaker See is especially popular, not only because of its striking color but also its peaceful location. It is perfect for paddling along the shore with stunning views of the Mittagskogel mountain.
Another highlight is the Ossiacher See, which stretches around 11 kilometers – ideal for longer tours. Quiet bays, natural beaches, and breathtaking panoramic views make every outing an experience.
Those who prefer to paddle off the beaten path should check out the Drau Paddling Trail. The Drau River can be explored via SUP on several stages – a great way to discover the natural and cultural landscape of the Drau Valley from a new perspective. Entry points can even be found in the center of Villach, such as at the FreizeitBASE in the heart of the city. The Gail River, the largest tributary of the Drau, also invites visitors to tour through the beautiful Dobratsch Nature Park.
Smaller bodies of water like the Silbersee, Magdalenensee, or Vassacher See are also perfect for a spontaneous paddle or first attempts on the board. The unique combination of alpine scenery and Mediterranean flair gives the region its special charm – making Villach a true paddling city.

Around the lakes, SUP fans will find excellent infrastructure: rental stations, guided tours, SUP yoga, and beginner courses ensure everyone gets what they’re looking for. Many swimming spots are easily accessible by car or bike – perfect for spontaneous trips on hot summer days.

THE LAKE ROCKS: THE FESTIVAL HIGHLIGHT FOR SUP FAN
When paddleboards stack up on the turquoise Faaker See, paddles rhythmically cut through the water, and chill music floats across the lawn, it can only mean one thing: THE LAKE ROCKS is back.
Since 2022, the Villach – Faaker See – Ossiacher See region transforms every year around Ascension Day into a gathering place for the international stand-up paddling community. In numerous professional, amateur, and hobby competitions, SUP fans from around the world come together to compete, connect, and enjoy the unique atmosphere.
Exciting races – part of the renowned SUP Alps Trophy, the ICF World Ranking Series, and the Austrian SUP National Championships – make this festival one of the most important paddle events in the entire Alpine-Adriatic region. The sporting program is complemented by a colorful lineup of side events: taster sessions, SUP yoga, after-race parties with live music, and plenty of opportunities to test out gear.
The central meeting point is the SUP Village at Strandcamping Gruber on the north shore of the Faaker See – a spacious area for connection, advice, and experience. Additional race venues include the FreizeitBASE in downtown Villach and the Panoramabeach on the Faaker See.
THE LAKE ROCKS is much more than a sports event. It’s an international festival that uniquely combines stand-up paddling, lifestyle, and nature experiences.

Anyone who wants to experience the full variety of SUP in Villach should mark their calendars for the weekend of May 29th to June 1st, 2025. A total of six exciting competitions are scheduled – for professionals, amateurs, and beginners. One of the most entertaining events: the popular TEAM Race, where teams of eight compete on oversized SUPs.
