Children need plenty of space to run, climb, and explore – but in apartments or small gardens, that space is often limited. Luckily, Villach offers a wide range of family-friendly playgrounds with fun and varied activities for every age group.

With a total of 26 public playgrounds, the city on the Drau provides everything from classic swings to modern inclusive play equipment. These playgrounds not only offer active outdoor fun but also serve as valuable meeting places where children can make new friends.

VILLACH’S PLAYGROUNDS AT A GLANCE

Whether it’s a cozy corner for swinging or a sprawling adventure paradise, families in Villach can choose from many exciting play areas. All playgrounds are regularly maintained by the city, ensuring a safe and carefree experience.

Here’s an overview of the variety of playgrounds awaiting little and big explorers alike in Villach:

1. LARGE PLAY ADVENTURE PARKS

Covering an impressive 16,000 m², the Fellach playground is one of the biggest in Villach. Highlights include the FlyLine zipline, diverse climbing structures, and soccer goals. At the Wasenboden playground, kids can enjoy an exciting “children’s city” with a play ship, soccer fields, and a modern inclusive play area designed for children with special needs.

Families will also find versatile play spaces in St. Martin, St. Ulrich, Neue Heimat, and Walter-Dick-Park in Landskron, offering climbing frames, ball game areas, sandpits, and large play combinations. Thanks to a mix of soccer and ball play opportunities alongside modern climbing and sliding elements, not only the youngest but also older kids are guaranteed plenty of fun.

2. PLAYGROUND CLASSICS

The all-rounders among playgrounds offer everything children love – from slides and swings to open spaces for running around and ball games. Völkendorf, Heiligengeist, and the Parkhotel playground feature varied play structures, slides, and swings. In Dinzlpark and the Abstimmungspark in Drobollach, kids can enjoy climbing frames, nest swings, spring riders, and balance equipment for even more movement and fun. These playground classics are perfect for families who want a mix of climbing, romping, and relaxed play.

3. THEMED PLAYGROUNDS

Here, play and imagination come together to create little adventure worlds that inspire children to set off on creative journeys. The Stadtpark playground combines a knight’s castle, carousel, and nest swing with a brand-new water play area added in summer 2025. On around 150 m², children can splash, dig, and experiment with water play tables, a scoop wheel, hand pumps, long water channels, an Archimedean screw, and various basins.

The playground on Heidenfeldstraße is a paradise for toddlers with a play giraffe, elephant slide, and hammocks, while the “Grünes Eck” in Perau focuses on natural materials, motor skills courses, and a wheelchair-accessible carousel. In St. Magdalen, a robinia wood motor skills playground with wobble beams and balance bridges provides exciting climbing and balancing challenges.

These themed playgrounds spark imagination, encourage motor skills, and make every visit a little adventure.

4. SMALL BUT SPECIAL

Charming mini-playgrounds are tucked away right in the city – perfect for short breaks. The play equipment at Hans-Gasser-Platz and Freihausplatz is designed especially for toddlers. On Italiener Straße, a mermaid-themed play structure with edible plants invites kids to explore, while Schillerpark (Peraustraße) features a small combo of slide, hammock, and swing, creating an urban play oasis.

Beyond the city center, families can discover more small but delightful playgrounds with unique highlights: in Marxrain, a wooden pony and seating areas set the stage for relaxed play; in Hafnerpark in Egg am Faaker See, swings and a chess set await. St. Niklas offers a sandbox and play tower, while Zauchen features two spring riders. At Strandbad Drobollach, a play ship adds maritime flair, while Vogelweidepark impresses with a trampoline, slackline, and climbing frame. Maria Gail rounds things off with a balancing course and spring animals.

A CITY FOR FAMILIES

For many years, Villach has been committed to expanding and improving family-friendly infrastructure. Green spaces and playgrounds are key meeting places that encourage activity and social interaction. Several playgrounds are designed with accessibility in mind – from inclusive equipment at Wasenboden to the wheelchair-accessible carousel at Grünes Eck in Perau.

For this commitment, Villach has been awarded the title of “Family-Friendly Municipality” several times since 2014 – most recently in 2024. The city continues to invest in new green spaces and play areas: a wheelchair-accessible trampoline will open soon, and new playground equipment is planned for the fall, including a fire brigade-themed playground, likely to be built in the garden of the Khevenhüller School.

Whether by the lake, in the city park, or in the heart of the old town – Villach’s playgrounds are as diverse as the city itself. Tailored to the needs of children and families, they provide space to play, explore, and make friends – all free of charge. So, pack a picnic, don’t forget your water bottle, and set off on your next playground adventure!
