When summer temperatures rise, Villach and its surroundings offer plenty of ways to escape the heat. Whether it’s shady parks, refreshing water fountains, free public bathing spots or cool nature escapes, these places provide the perfect refreshment on hot summer days.

SHADY SPOTS TO RELAX & COOL DOWN

You don’t always need water to cool down on a hot day. Sometimes, all it takes is a shady spot beneath old trees to take a break, recharge, and enjoy a moment of tranquillity. Villach is home to numerous green retreats that offer welcome relief during the summer months. Among the most popular spots are the Wasenboden with its impressive protected ancient trees, and the Stadtpark with its fountain and water playground, which is especially popular with families looking for a refreshing break. The Schillerpark, Walter-von-der-Vogelweidepark in Lind, Dinzlpark in St. Martin, and the green spaces in Völkendorf also invite visitors to relax in the shade. These are just a few examples of the many green oases Villach has to offer, providing peaceful moments away from the summer heat.

For a quick refreshment, around 60 drinking water fountains throughout the city provide a welcome stop. Here, you can refill your water bottle free of charge or cool down with fresh Villach drinking water. A special tip: the fine mist installation at Nikolaiplatz creates a pleasant cooling effect right in the heart of the city during summer. Water features at Rathausplatz and Hans-Gasser-Platz also provide refreshing moments in the city center.

DIVE INTO COOL WATERS: FREE LAKE ACCESS & PADDLING FUN

What could be better on a hot summer day than jumping into the crystal-clear waters of Carinthia? Around Villach, numerous free public bathing spots combine easy-going swimming fun with stunning views. Particularly popular are Villach’s free-access bathing areas, which combine excellent facilities with free swimming:

The campingbeach in Annenheim and the sunsetbeach in Egg at Lake Faaker See also offer relaxed swimming experiences with beautiful views at an affordable entrance fee. If you are simply looking for a quick dip to cool off, numerous wild bathing spots in and around Villach offer the perfect opportunity. They are ideal for a short swim and refreshment, but are not intended as places to spend a longer time or set up a sunbathing spot.

Villach is not only a place to enjoy the water, but also to explore it from the water. As a paddling city, Villach offers ideal conditions for kayaking, stand-up paddling and canoe tours on the Drau, the Gail and the many lakes in the surrounding area. The combination of movement, water and a gentle breeze makes every trip a refreshing summer activity.

COOL RETREATS WITH A CULTURAL TWIST

Even away from lakes and rivers, Villach offers pleasant retreats on hot days. The churches in the city center, including the Stadtpfarrkirche, Nikolaikirche, Heiligenkreuzkirche and the Evangelical Church, invite visitors to pause and cool down. The Villach Mediathek, the Villach City Museum and the Carinthian Relief at Schillerpark also combine cultural experiences with a refreshing break indoors.

The ATRIO Villach shopping center is another welcome escape from the summer heat. Its air-conditioned interiors are perfect for relaxed shopping or taking a refreshing coffee break.
