VILLACH AS A PIONEER OF MODERN URBAN DEVELOPMENT

Villach is not only an attractive place to live and work, but also a model for modern, sustainable, and inclusive urban development in Europe. For its innovative approach to designing urban living spaces, the city on the river Drau was recognized by the European Union with the prestigious URBACT Good Practice label for “Collaborative Integrated Urban Development.”
VILLACH AMONG EUROPE’S LEADING CITIES
With this award, Villach joins an exclusive group of European cities honored for their exemplary approaches to urban development. In Austria, only Vienna has received the same recognition. Other European recipients include cities such as Copenhagen, Budapest, Munich, Dublin, Barcelona, and Vilnius.
AWARD-WINNING URBAN DEVELOPMENT
The URBACT recognition is not the first accolade for Villach’s urban development efforts. The “ISEK Nikolaiquartier” project, covering the area between the regional hospital and the brewery, has already been honored with the Kommunal Impuls Award as well as an award from the Austrian Administrative Prize (Österreichischer Verwaltungspreis).
These recognitions underscore the high quality, sustainability, and forward-thinking approach of Villach’s urban planning, which creates living spaces that consistently place residents’ quality of life, functionality, and needs at the center.
Villach demonstrates impressively how innovative urban planning concepts can be implemented in practice to shape the cities of tomorrow. In doing so, the city not only sets benchmarks for other municipalities but also shows that sustainable, inclusive, and forward-looking urban development can significantly enhance the quality of life for all residents.
