REUSE INSTEAD OF WASTE: VILLACH CELEBRATES THE REUSE SPRING

For several years, Villach has been consistently committed to sustainability and a circular economy. A key pillar of these efforts is the city’s ReUse project, which aims to extend the lifespan of products, reduce waste, and conserve valuable resources.
At the beginning of May, this commitment becomes visible through the first-ever ReUse Spring. For one week, Villach’s city centre transforms into a hub of reuse, inviting residents and visitors to explore sustainable ideas, creative solutions, and practical initiatives around ReUse.
REUSE: VILLACH’S RESPONSE TO THE THROWAWAY CULTURE
The term ReUse refers to the reuse of products, goods, and electronic devices that are used but still fully functional. Through its ReUse project, Villach has built a strong network of social enterprises, associations, and waste management partners to actively put this idea into practice.
Functional electrical appliances that might otherwise be discarded prematurely can be handed in at the municipal waste collection centre. After inspection and, if necessary, minor repairs carried out by ARGE Sozial Villach, they are returned to circulation at fair prices. The same applies to other second-hand items such as shoes, books, or tableware, which are collected and redistributed via ReUse boxes and ReUse bags. This not only conserves resources and reduces environmental impact but also creates jobs in the social economy sector and supports people on lower incomes.
In 2021, Villach’s ReUse project was awarded the e5 Crown, a recognition for outstanding sustainability initiatives.
A WEEK DEDICATED TO SUSTAINABILITY
From 4th to 9th May, Villach’s city centre will be transformed into a vibrant ReUse hub as part of the ReUse Spring. Every day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and on Saturday until 12 p.m., the focus is entirely on reuse, offering a diverse programme dedicated to sustainable living and creative ideas.
Throughout the week, refurbished lost-and-found bicycles from the Social Enterprises Carinthia (SBK) will be available at fair prices. In addition, a range of daily changing ReUse workshops will take place, hosted by partners such as the Waste Management Association and ARGE Sozial. The programme includes everything from jewellery making and bicycle repair to computer workshops and creative upcycling formats. The full workshop schedule is available online.
A special highlight is the CHS fashion show on Friday, featuring upcycled fashion, accompanied by a creative bag design station. On Saturday, the Repair Café takes centre stage, where seemingly broken items are brought back to life under expert guidance – an inspiring example of hands-on repair culture. Also on Saturday, SBK will offer free bicycle inspections, rounding off the programme.
BEYOND THE SQUARE: REUSE PARTNER ACTIVITIES
The importance of the ReUse network extends beyond the city centre during ReUse Spring, with numerous partner organisations across Villach launching their own initiatives in support of reuse and the circular economy.
- ARGE Sozial offers a 50% discount at its furniture warehouse during its “Open Week.”
- SBK provides 20% off services such as bicycle repairs and maintenance.
- FAB invites visitors to a day of open doors on Thursday, featuring a swap market.
- Together City celebrates its opening week at its new location at Widmanngasse 28 with special offers.
- The Caritas Carla+ Shop adds a welcoming touch with coffee, cake, and a prize wheel for customers.
The ReUse Spring is an invitation to rethink how we use resources and to discover the value already present in what we have. It offers an opportunity to get inspired and experience sustainable ideas first-hand.
