Carinthia, also known as the land of lakes, is home to some of the cleanest and clearest lakes in Europe. The latest data from the Carinthian Lake Report reaffirms this quality year after year.

An outstanding example of this purity and freshness is the Faaker See near Villach. Renowned for its turquoise-blue color and clear waters, the Lake Faaker See sets a nationwide standard for untouched nature and clean water. The latest measurements show that the Faaker See consistently receives the highest classification in the Lake Report, far above drinking water standards.

With a unique combination of natural spring feeding and high flow velocity, the water of the Faaker See completely renews itself every 1.8 years, ensuring its quality and cleanliness.

The water quality is not only a product of its natural properties but also the result of the joint efforts of locals and visitors who are committed to protecting the environment. To preserve this valuable natural jewel, the region of Villach - Faaker See - Ossiacher See launched the "mein SEE" (“my LAKE”) campaign on World Water Day, March 22nd, 2024. This campaign encourages conscious behavior and mindfulness to maintain the purity and beauty of the Faaker See.

Lake Faaker See impresses not only with its purity and freshness, but also with its characteristic turquoise-blue color. This unique color is created by the finest calcite crystals that reflect light in the water, giving rise to the distinctive turquoise-blue color. To preserve this uniqueness and the high water quality of the Faaker See, it is important to protect it. As part of the "mein SEE" campaign, valuable tips have been developed on how all visitors to the lake can contribute together through mindful and responsible actions to preserve its exceptional water quality:

  • Use public transportation or bicycles to reach the lake and avoid parking congestion.
  • Shower before entering the water to prevent sudden cooling to maintain water quality.
  • Apply mineral-rich sunscreen at least 30 minutes before swimming to protect yourself and keep the water clean.
  • Avoid feeding waterfowl to prevent water quality degradation.
  • Dispose of your trash properly and ensure that your dog's waste is also disposed of correctly.
  • Allow your dog to drink from the lake but please do not let it swim in it.
  • Use the restroom facilities and avoid relieving yourself in the open or in the lake.
