A QUANTUM LEAP FROM VILLACH: LAYING THE GROUNDWORK FOR TOMORROW’S COMPUTERS

The next generation of computers could be taking shape in Villach. Through the European CHAMP-ION project, a pilot production line for ion-trap quantum chips is being established in Villach. The project's goal is to bring quantum technology out of specialized research laboratories and into industrial manufacturing, paving the way for scalable, high-volume production.
QUANTUM TECHNOLOGY GAINS MOMENTUM
Quantum computing is widely regarded as one of the most transformative technologies of the coming decades. Quantum computers can solve highly complex problems that are beyond the reach of conventional computers – even the world's most powerful supercomputers. Their potential applications span a wide range of industries, from accelerating the discovery of new medicines and advanced materials to optimizing supply chains and enabling more efficient management of smart power grids. According to industry forecasts, the global quantum technology market could grow to as much as US$97 billion by 2035.
The CHAMP-ION project marks the next major step toward bringing quantum technology into commercial manufacturing. Led by Silicon Austria Labs (SAL), a consortium of 21 partners from six European countries is working to advance the entire value chain for miniaturized quantum chips. With a total budget of €50 million, the project is part of a broader European initiative to establish six pilot production lines for different quantum technologies. These industry-oriented facilities will also support startups, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and research institutions.
VILLACH TAKES CENTER STAGE IN ION-TRAP QUANTUM CHIPS
Villach plays a pivotal role in the project. Under the leadership of Silicon Austria Labs (SAL), the city is establishing an industrial pilot production line for ion-trap quantum chips – a technology that integrates electronic and photonic structures onto a single chip. This approach is expected to enable compact, high-performance quantum systems.
Infineon Technologies Austria is also contributing its extensive expertise in semiconductor manufacturing. Its quantum laboratory and production facilities in Villach are key elements of the project, supporting the development of next-generation quantum chip technologies.
By bringing together research institutions, global technology companies, and industrial partners, CHAMP-ION is helping bridge the gap between scientific research and commercial application. The collaboration is laying the foundation for Europe to develop, manufacture, and ultimately commercialize critical quantum technologies.
With CHAMP-ION, Villach is helping position Europe at the forefront of next-generation quantum chip development and manufacturing, making a significant contribution to the continent's future leadership in quantum technology.
