My way to Villach

I have worked in the semiconductor equipment industry for more than 20 years now. Before moving to Villach I was working for Lam Research in California. My wife Jitske – a native of New Zealand – and I were looking for an opportunity to live outside the U.S. as long as our two daughters were still younger. Lam Research purchased a company named SEZ in Villach and after my first business trip here I was asking management every month for an opportunity to move to this town. In 2010 this became a reality. Plan A was to be here for two years, then it became three years and now we have been here for seven and hope to stay at least another seven years.

What I love about Villach

  • Nature – the setting in the Alps is simply spectacular.
  • Sports – the region offers a long list of options for outdoor sports und everything is so close.
  • Location – Villach is a great base for travelling Europe.
Villach is a spectacular place to live if you enjoy the outdoors.

My three tips for new arrivals in Villach

  1. Learn the language! German can be difficult, but even learning a little opens many doors.
  2. Get outside! Villach is a spectacular place to live if you enjoy the outdoors. There are endless opportunities for sports so make the most of it. At the same time, it is a great way to get to know the area.
  3. Learn to laugh at yourself! Moving to another culture is rewarding but also stressful at times. The key to success is a good sense of humor.
