The New Year has a way of getting people excited to make a change. For many of us, that means a healthier and happier version of ourselves. So here we are, it’s a new year and many of us are begrudgingly coming up with those pesky New Year’s Resolutions. The pressure is on to figure out a way to make this year better while many of us are still reeling from the weeks of holiday parties. Looking for some inspiration for the “new you”? Worry not! Welcome2Villach has some ideas for you to get fit and active in the heart of Carinthia.

Join a Sportverein

Did you know that there are more than 50 Sportvereine in the Villach region? There are Sportvereine (Sports Clubs) for all kinds of sports. Whether you are interested in classic sports like football, ice hockey, or basketball or more special interest sports such as TaeKwonDo, billiards or fencing, you can find a club in the Villach region. Find the perfect Sportverein for you with a search on the City of Villach website.

If you didn’t find the club you were looking for, you can always start your own. It is possible to rent school spaces for a low fee from the City of Villach.

Take a Fitness Class

The Carinthian Volkshochschulen has lots of fitness classes for anyone interested in staying active. For example, they have classes for yoga, aerobics, and Zumba. There are also fitness classes designed specifically for the elderly or new mothers. They also offer short-term classes for those that cannot make a long time commitment. For example, you can try a session of “Crawling Fitness” for only 15 euros - it may sound funny, but crawling is an intense workout. Check out the VKHS website for more information.

The Kärnten Therme in Warmbad also offers fitness classes and swimming lessons. Pilates, spinning, and even pole dancing classes can be found at the Kärnten Therme. Plus, there is always the opportunity to relax in the sauna afterwards. Warmbad is renowned for its natural thermal waters perfect for unwinding after a workout.

The City of Villach, also occasionally offers free fitness classes. During summer 2017, Villach organized “Bewegt im Park” with free weekly fitness classes. Keep an eye out for future events.

Get Outside

Getting fit doesn’t have to cost money, with so many beautiful outdoor locations in Villach it is easy to enjoy the great outdoors. Go for a bike ride on the Drau river bike path. Enjoy a relaxing walk in one of Villach’s many parks. During the summer, go for a swim at the Silbersee, a local lake without an entrance fee. In the cold weather months just remember, there is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothes.

Life in the Alps-Adriatic region offers a variety of ways to get fit and stay active. Whether it means hiking in the mountains, skiing on the Alpine slopes, or going for a roadtrip with friends to swim in the Adriatic sea there are lots of opportunities for all.

Happy New Year from Welcome2Villach!
